Vettori thrilled with Tigers spinners

When it comes to spin bowling department, over the years Bangladesh cricket team have produced some of the promising young talents.

Bangladesh have a rich history of left-arm spinners and in particular spinners doing a good job. However, they often lacked consistency in the long run and did not achieve what they were capable of.

Former New Zealand skipper and legendary spin bowler Daniel Vettori was appointed as the Tigers spin bowling coach last year.

He started his work with the Tigers at the end of last October. Slowly but surely Vettori is now revolutionising this current talented bunch of Bangladeshi spinners.

Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam has gone from being a Test bowler to being a bowler in all versions. Tigers long cry for a deadly leg-spinner might finally be over with Aminul Islam and Vettori is making sure of that by nurturing him properly.

Young off-spinner Naeem Hasan has also sharpened his skills under Vettori and proving to be a deadly proposition for the opposition team.

With the exception of Shakib Al Hasan, all the spinners around the Bangladesh national team are young. Everyone has a long way to go in their career and Vettori wants everyone to be involved with him in this journey.

In an interview with a national daily from New Zealand, he said, “It’s exciting to work with them (Bangladesh spinners). This team of spinners are very good. They will all play for Bangladesh for a long time. If I can help to enhance them, then I will understand that I have done my job here.”

Taijul, who made his international debut in 2014, has been an expert in red ball cricket for a long. However, since Vettori’s arrival he has been regular in all formats of the game.

Taijul thanked Vettori for changing his fortunes and putting trust on him. However, Vettori himself praised Taijul without taking any credit, saying, “Taijul is becoming a better bowler little by little every day.”

In off-spinner Naeem, Vettori sees the shadow of Australia’s fantastic off-spinner Nathan Lyon. “Naeem's talent is exceptional. He reminds me of Australia’s Lyon. His off-spin bowling, top-spin everything resembles with Lyon.”

Vettori likes the fighting attitude of another off-spinner Mehdi Hasan Miraj. “Miraj is very combative! He has spin skills, along with his all-round ability.”

Vettori has given leg-spinner Aminul plenty of time to prepare for the T20 format. In practice, Aminul has worked with the position of the wrist, without the ball. Under Vettori’s stint, Aminul got his debut in a T20 match against India in New Delhi last year, where Bangladesh defeated India for the first time in their own soil.

Aminul played a pivotal role in that match. However, Vettori reminded of Aminul’s inexperience, “So far, Aminul is only involved in T20 cricket and he did not play much cricket. The more he plays, the better he will be.”
