Abu Hena Md Akhtar Hossain Rasel, a member of the Executive Committee of the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) and a veteran crime journalist, died after suffering a cardiac arrest in Dhaka on Wednesday. He was 57.
According to a death certificate issued by the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Rasel was taken to the institute's emergency department at 12:39pm before being shifted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU-2), where he was pronounced dead at 1:20pm.
In a press release, CRAB Office Secretary Ismail Hossain Emu said Rasel had gone to Talukder Filling Station near Asadgate to refuel his motorcycle when he suddenly experienced chest pain.
Local people rushed him to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, where he died while undergoing treatment, the release said.
CRAB President Mirza Mehedi Tamal, General Secretary MM Badshah and other members of the association's executive committee expressed deep shock at his death.
They prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and extended their heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.
Rasel is survived by a son, a daughter, relatives, friends and numerous well-wishers.
The son of Md Muslim Uddin, Rasel was serving as a special correspondent covering the crime beat for the Bangla daily Khobor Sangjog.
During his nearly three-decade career in journalism, he also worked for Samakal, Kaler Kantho, Bhorer Kagoj and several other newspapers.
Besides CRAB, he was also a member of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) and several other journalists' organisations.
