Asabul Haque, a resident of Chuadanga Sadar Upazila, makes fortune by producing vermicompost fertilizer. Now, he is dreaming of a bright future.

He was a tea maker in a small store in his village. He had to struggle to bear the daily expenses and education cost of his children. But the entrepreneurship of producing vermicompost fertilizer adds smiles to his face.

While talking to Bangladesh Post, he narrated with deep emotion how he became an entrepreneur.

Asabul said he was a tea stall owner and later started rearing deer ships to change his fortune. Though he made profit in rearing deer ships he hoped more for expanding his business and creating employment for poor people in his village. He first started producing vermicompost fertilizer 9 years ago with the help of the local Agriculture Extension Department.

Asabul said that he is earning Tk two lakh every month by selling the fertilizer and earthworms, and it will increase further in future.

About the process to produce this fertilizer, he said at first cow dung, chicken faeces, poison-free green plants and vegetables, fruits shell and banana tree flakes are needed for it.

Agogic earthworm, the main component of producing the vermicompost, is a must for it. Seeing his success, many farmers in Chuadanga are seen building their fortunes through making and selling vermicompost as its use is rising for crop and vegetable production gradually for the last couple of years.

The venture is contributing a lot towards lessening the gradually mounting pressure on chemical fertilizer in the region.

Bivas Chandra Saha, the deputy-director of Chuadanga District Agriculture Extension Department, said any jobless youth can produce vermicompost fertilizer on a small land with a small amount of capital.

In this case, he said, Asabul is an example. The official said there is a huge demand of this fertilizer to produce more crops. “We will provide all kinds of support to anybody if they want to produce the vermicompost fertilizer.”
