With the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan, the vegetables prices have almost doubled in the city’s kitchen markets.Besides, the prices of other essential commodities also keep on soaring, with people questioning the authorities concerned for failing to arrest the skyrocketing price hike.

Against the backdrop of surging coronavirus cases, strict enforcement of country-wide lockdown has begun on Wednesday alongside the beginning of holy month. Different varieties of vegetables are now being sold between Tk 60 and Tk 90 per kg.

Common people have alleged the unscrupulous businesses in association with the unholy nexus of strong syndicate have hiked prices of vegetables and other essentials during Ramadan which has created an extra burden on them.

The government has taken various measures to control the price hike to provide relief to the general public, cautioning tough action would be taken through special drives if there is any attempt to artificially increase prices through unfair means.

Considering lockdown and Ramadan, the government must

align its supply chain and retail distribution to ensure a continuous

supply of vegetables and other products across the country

It has also assured the people of an adequate supply of essential commodities and so, there is no chance of an unusual price hike when the demand for these products increase during Ramadan.

But the government’s efforts to arrest the skyrocketing price hike of essentials has so far produced no results.  And the soaring prices of daily essentials are eating into the low income group’s family budget.

Yet, we still believe the prices of essentials will come down if the government takes proper steps and monitors the prices of essentials at all major markets across the capital city, other metropolitan cities and district towns throughout the fasting month.

We think this will definitely help stabilise the prices of daily essentials across the city's kitchen markets, otherwise unscrupulous businesses will continue to hike prices.

Apart from these, considering lockdown and Ramadan, the government must align its supply chain and retail distribution to ensure a continuous supply of vegetables and other products across the country.
