Vegetable prices declining, chicken up

At the end of the holy month of Ramadan, prices of almost all vegetables are declining while prices of egg, fish, onion and meat remain stable. At the beginning of the holy month, prices of all vegetables were skyrocketing, but are now available at within Tk 30. On the other hand, prices of chicken, garlic, ginger and sugar are rising again.

The scenario was revealed in the capital's Karwan Bazar, Rampura and Malibagh kitchen markets. At vegetable markets, per kilogram (kg) green chili was selling at Tk 40-50, papaya Tk 40, cucumber Tk 30, carrot Tk 30, tomato Tk 30, lemon Tk 20-40 (four pieces), brinjal Tk 50-60, bitter gourd Tk 40, okra Tk 40, gourd Tk 50-60 and multitude Tk 30 per kg.

Karwan Bazar vegetable trader Ibrahim said, as people started leaving the capital city for Eid, vegetable demand decreased, but would rise again once the Eid is over. At the kitchen market, price of broiler chicken increased by Tk 15-20 per kilogram (kg), while red layer chicken, Pakistani chicken increased by Tk 50 and per piece local chicken increased by Tk 100.

Meanwhile, broiler chicken was selling at Tk 150-160 which was Tk 135-145 per kg past week, red layer chicken price is Tk 225-230 which was Tk 180-200 last week, Pakistani chicken was Tk 190-280 which was Tk 240-250 per kg last week, and local chicken Tk 450-500. However, beef and mutton were selling as per the government fixed price, and based on market, beef was selling at Tk 525- 550 and mutton at Tk 750-850 per kg, boulder beef was Tk 500 per kg, buffalo meat was Tk 480.

Price of egg was found less than that in the previous week, per dozen eggs was Tk 75-85 which was Tk 85-90 last week. Egg trader Abul Kashem said, egg price suddenly fell in the wholesale market ahead of Eid, that's why price of egg will remain the same till Eid. Per kg local onion was found selling at Tk 30 like in the previous week, while imported onion, based on quality was Tk 20-24.

Garlic price slightly rose to sell at Tk 135, while ginger price was found also high at Tk 130. In the fish market, prices of fishes were also found like those in the previous week. Chital fish was selling at Tk 500-550 per kg, Awn fish, Tk 650-700, Rui-Katla Tk 300-600 per kg, and tilapia, Tk 150-200, Boal fish, Tk 700-900, Pangas, Tk 180-250, Pabda, Tk 600, and Shing, Tk 400-600.

About the fish price, Karwan Bazar fish traders informed this correspondent that there is no possibility of fish price decreasing before Eid, as fishing ban is continuing.Prices of rice and other grocery items remained stable while sugar price suddenly rose by Tk 2 per kg. A Karwan Bazar shopkeeper Yusuf said they have to purchase 50 kg sacks at a price of Tk 2500, which was Tk 2400 a week ago.
