Vegetable, chicken prices up

Rice, edible oil unchanged

Prices of vegetables, chicken, ginger and turmeric shot up, while that of eggs decreased during the last week.

On the other hand, prices of edible oil, rice and few other essentials remained unchanged. 

On Friday, while visiting different kitchen markets in the capital, including Karwan Bazar, this correspondent found such price variations of essential commodities. 

Traders said, due to the lockdown, prices of vegetables, chicken, and other items had increased. 

On the second day of the one-week lockdown, the price of broiler chicken came down a bit but now it has gone up again. The price of broiler chicken has gone up by Tk 10 per kg in one day. However, the prices of Pakistani cock, Sonali and red layer chicken remained unchanged. 

Broiler chicken was being sold at Tk 160 to Tk 165 per kg which was Tk 150 per kg in most markets on Thursday.

Besides broiler chickens, the price of Sonali chickens also declined last Tuesday. The price of this chicken, which was sold at Tk 360 per kg, came down to Tk 280 to Tk 240. And the red layer chicken, which had been sold for Tk 200 per kg for a long time, was being sold at that price.

Broiler chicken egg was selling at Tk 85 per dozen while Duck egg was Tk 135 and local chicken egg was sold at Tk 180 per dozen. 

The prices of beef and mutton and other products including spices remained unchanged in these markets. Mutton was being sold at Tk 700 to Tk 750 per kg and beef at Tk 580 per kg. 

In the vegetable market, it was found that, carrots were selling at Tk 35 per kg, beans at Tk 60 per kg, brinjals at Tk 60 per kg, tomatoes at Tk 50 per kg, and string bean at Tk 70 per kg, drum sticks (Shajne) at Tk 80 per kg. 

Depending on the size gourd was currently being sold at Tk 60 and cabbage at Tk 30 to Tk 45. Sweet pumpkin was being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 40 per kg, snake gourd at Tk 60, parwal at Tk 50, and potatoes were selling at Tk 20 per kg.

Papaya was selling at Tk 30, cucumber at Tk 50 and peas at Tk 40 to Tk 50 per kg. 

A vegetables trader at Rampura kitchen market Ibrahim said, "Vegetables-laden trucks movement is being interrupted due to the lockdown imposed by the government. As a result, commodities prices have gone up". 

Besides, dried chillies were being sold at Tk 200 per kg, garlic at Tk 60 to Tk 120, ginger at Tk 70 and turmeric at Tk 160 to Tk 200 per kg.

Sugar was being sold in the market at Tk 70 per kg while onion was selling at Tk 35 in these markets. 

BR-28 rice was being sold at Tk 45 to Tk 48 per kg, Miniket at Tk 65, Nazirshail at Tk 65 to 70, Sorna rice at Tk 48 to Tk 50. Loose edible oil was being sold at Tk 135 per liter. 

A one-kg chital fish was selling at Tk 450 to Tk 500, Awn fish at Tk 500, Rohi at Tk 250 to Tk 350 per kg, Katla at Tk 280 to Tk 380, Tilapia sold at Tk Tk 150, Boal fish at Tk 400 to Tk 500, Pangas was sold at Tk 140 to Tk 170, Pabda sold at Tk 150 to Tk 250, and Shing was sold at Tk 300 to Tk 450 (based on quality and size) in these markets.
