US pledges total support to Interim Govt

US President Joe Biden on Tuesday pledged his country’s full support to the Interim Government of Bangladesh during a rare one-on-one meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

President Biden said if the students could make such a lot of sacrifice for their country, they too should do more, according to the Press Wing of Chief Adviser.

Professor Yunus apprised Joe Biden about how the students rose against the tyranny of the previous government and gave their lives to create the opportunity to rebuild Bangladesh.

He also underscored that his government must succeed in rebuilding the country and would need US cooperation.

The Chief Adviser also handed a copy of the ‘The Art of Triumph, a book on wall paintings drawn by the students and young students during the revolution, to President Biden during the meeting.

This meeting is an example of growing relations between the two countries as no US president has held a bilateral meeting with any Bangladesh head of government in the past decades.

Chief Adviser Professor Yunus left Dhaka for New York on Monday to attend the 79th session of the UNGA.

This is his first trip abroad as the Chief Adviser, who took oath as head of the interim government on August 8 after the fall of Sheikh Hasina led government amid a mass upsurge.

Soon after his assumption of office, a high-powered US delegation visited Bangladesh and held meetings with Professor Yunus.

During the meeting, Professor Yunus sought support from the United States to rebuild the country, carry out vital reforms and bring back stolen assets.

In an immediate reaction, the US embassy in Dhaka in a statement said that as Bangladesh looked to chart a more equitable and inclusive future, the US stands ready to support those efforts.

This year's UNGA is particularly significant for Bangladesh as it marks the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s membership in the United Nations.
