Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen on Tuesday said that any change in the US administration following the elections would not impact the bilateral relations.
“US' relationship does not depend on individual or party (in Washington) as far as Bangladesh-US relationship is concerned,” he said while talking with the members of the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the foreign ministry.
Incumbent Republican president Donald Trump is pitted against the Democrat Joe Biden in fiercely battled elections on Tuesday. The first polls opened from 05:00 EDT (10:00 GMT) in Vermont.
The US and Bangladesh have forged a strong partnership in recent years. Washington considers Dhaka a ‘key partner’ in the region.
Bangladesh is also hopeful to bring back Rashed Chowdhury, a convicted fugitive killer of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The issue is in the US court as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged Trump to send him back in a letter.
The foreign secretary said the relationship with the US goes through an ‘institutional framework’.
He said the US judiciary is independent, so there will be no impact in the process of bringing back the Bangabandhu killer even after the change of administration.
DCAB President Angur Nahar Monty and General Secretary Touhidur Rahman were present.
