The total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 7.4 million on Sunday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University, reports Xinhua.

U.S. COVID-19 case count rose to 7,411,716, with the national death toll reaching 209,720, as of 3:23 p.m. local time (1923 GMT), according to the CSSE.

California reported 830,766 cases, the highest among all states. Texas and Florida both registered more than 700,000 cases, followed by New York state with more than 460,000 cases. Other states with over 200,000 cases include Georgia, Illinois, Arizona, North Carolina, New Jersey and Tennessee, according to the CSSE.

U.S. COVID-19 cases hit 7 million on Sept. 25.

By far, the United States remains the world's worst-hit nation, with the most cases and deaths, making up more than one fifth of the global caseload and death toll, respectively.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump drove past supporters on Sunday outside the hospital where he was being treated for Covid-19, after announcing on Twitter a “surprise visit” to his backers, reports AFP.

Seen in a dark face mask, waving to crowds, the president’s motorcade rolled past before returning to the Walter Reed military hospital near Washington.

“We’re going to pay a little surprise to some of the great patriots that we have out on the street,” Trump said in a video posted to Twitter shortly before his appearance.

“I’m about to make a little surprise visit.”

Trump also said he “learned a lot about Covid” by “really going to school,” as he has battled the virus in hospital.

“This is the real school. This isn’t the ‘let’s read the books school,’ and I get it, and I understand it, and it’s a very interesting thing,” he added.

Trump’s doctors said Sunday that he has “continued to improve,” adding that he could be discharged as early as Monday.
