In Bangladesh, nursing had long been considered a low status profession. The development of nursing in Bangladesh reflects the country’s complex socio-cultural composition. However, people’s perception over this noble profession has changed over the years and now nursing is seen as a potentially lucrative career choice, a stepping stone to work overseas and towards greater social mobility for the entire family. This has led to an influx of men into the profession and to a positive change in the social status of nurses. This is indeed a welcome change. But the matter of concern is that most of the nurses in Bangladesh are not properly trained. Hence more emphasis should be given on the skill development of the nurses. The government must not overlook the need for upgrading training standard of nurses in order to meet the growing demand of specialized nurses at home and abroad.

In Bangladesh nursing as a profession lack clear career pathways and mechanisms for promotion; in-service training is rare (except in the best corporate hospitals); pay is low (especially in small private hospitals); and working conditions are often inadequate, lacking sufficient staff, equipment and infra-structure. The government should look into these matters and fix them to establish nursing as a respectful profession.
On the other hand, nurses should always exhibit professionalism in front of patients. Professionalism is a nursing skill encompassing many areas: respect, attitude, integrity, responsibility, and discipline. Nursing is not simply the ability to successfully carry out a series of routine tasks. Instead, nursing is a holistic practice, including physical, psychological, social, environmental and political features of an illness and its impact on patients and their families. Nurses play a very significant role in better health care in our society. Their profession can no way be ignored or neglected. Rather it has a bright and prestigious position with pride, honour and dignity. So the status of nurses must be upgraded following international provisions.
