The Osmani International Airport in Sylhet is being upgraded to match world-class air travel services at a total cost of Tk 2,760 crore.
The expansion work of Osmani International Airport has also been started at the instructions of the prime minister which include building a new modern terminal building, cargo storage building, air traffic control tower, administrative building, maintenance building, taxiway, and utility station will be constructed.
Once all this development work is completed Sylhet airport will be introduced to public with all the modern amenities.
Civil Aviation and Tourism State Minister, Md Mahbub Ali told Bangladesh Post, "Renovation and modernization of the country's airports are priority projects of the present government as it reflects a country's first impression abroad. In phases, all the airports will be upgraded.”
The development projects of Sylhet airport include runway, and taxiway overlaying project of the airport at a cost of Taka 450 crore and constructing terminal building at a cost of Tk 2100 crore. All modern security equipment including fire alarm systems, dual view scanning machines, ETD, under vehicle scanning systems has already been installed at Sylhet Osmani International Airport to ensure security and safety.
Mahbub Ali said, “To improve the quality of passenger services, the activities of all the airports of the country as well as Sylhet Osmani International Airport have increased many times. A safe and comfortable environment is being created by ensuring the safety of air passengers.”
According to CAAB information, direct flights from Sylhet Osmani International Airport to London has started since October 4. A separate lounge for London inbound and outbound passengers has been constructed. Runway project work and cargo shed construction work are about to be completed. Work on a new international terminal building there is underway.
Osmani Airport Manager, Hafiz Ahmed informed media that the Chinese contractor had set up their construction yard in the airport area and started work on the project.
A Korean company has done the architectural design of the airport building. Earlier, in May last year, a contract for the construction of a new terminal building at Sylhet Osmani International Airport was signed at the CAAB headquarters conference room. The project was approved at the ECNEC meeting in November 2018.
