UPDF man killed in ‘gunfight’

A member of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) was killed in a reported gunfight with army men at Baghaihat Ujubazar in Baghaichhari Upazila on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Shantimoy Chakma Sumon, 35, an accused in Naniarchar Upazila chairman Advocate Shaktiman Chakma murder case, Md Shafiullah, acting police superintendent of the district, said some UPDF members.

They opened fire on the army men of  Baghaihat Zone while they were patrolling the area around 10:15 am, prompting them to retaliate. Later, he said, Suman's body was recovered from the spot.

Officer-in-Charge of Sajek Police Station Israfil Majumder said the gunfight took place at Retkaba area of Sajek union around 11:00am.

A patrol vehicle of the Bangladesh Army was damaged during the incident, the OC said, adding that police recovered the body and two firearms from the spot.

Meanwhile, army personnel have enhanced vigilance in the area following the incident.On August 18, an army member was killed in a gun attack by a gang of miscreants in Rajasthali upazila of the district. 

The gang opened fire on a patrol team of Bangladesh Army at Poaitukhum, some 4-km off Rajasthali Army Camp.
