UP member candidate gets only one vote!

Golam Rasul, A UP member candidate from Salua union under Charghat upazila of Rajshahi district, has got just one vote in the fourth phase of union parishad (UP) polls.

The fourth phase of UP polls took place in 836 unions across the country on Sunday. He, Golam Rasul, wished to serve the people of his union and became a candidate by being assured to get votes from his relatives, neighbours and local people. Golam Rasul said that he did not even cast his own vote in his favour.

On December 26 evening, the Presiding Officer of Salua Degree College election centre declared the result of the votes. 

In the result, he received only one vote with the symbol Football.

It was learnt that Golam Rasul had three voters in his family including his wife and two sons. However, he did not receive their votes. 

However, Golam Rasul expressed his regret after not getting votes from his own family members. 

He said, “It doesn't matter whether the voters of my village voted for me or not but it is really regrettable that my own family members rejected me.”

I did not spend any money for getting the vote, he said. Bazlur Rahman, Presiding Officer of the Centre, said, “The voting at the centre was held in a congenial atmosphere. 

Ashraf Ali has been elected the ward member for the area.
