A union council member, Sohel Ahmed (32), was beaten to death by a mob in Araihazar on Monday morning.
The incident took place around 8am at Baliapara Bazaar in Brahmandi Union. Sohel was the member for Ward 3 and the son of Mokbul from Baliapara village. He was also involved in Awami League politics.
Local people said Sohel had long terrorised the area under the protection of former UP chairman Lak Mia during the previous Awami League government. After the fall of that government on 5 August 2024, he went into hiding. Recently he returned to the area and allegedly resumed extortion, which angered residents.
He had 12 to 13 cases against him, including murder, robbery and extortion. Enraged locals caught him and beat him to death on the spot.
Araihazar Police Station OC Khandaker Nasiruddin said residents had long been aggrieved by his abuses. His body has been sent to General Hospital morgue for post-mortem.
