Ariful Haq Mithu (41), General Secretary of the Union Juba League in Mujibnagar, Meherpur, has been arrested with foreign-made weapons and ammunition by a joint task force.
In a late-night operation on Friday, a joint team of the army and RAB-12, acting on a secret tip-off, raided Mithu’s residence in Mahajanpur village of Mujibnagar Upazila and took him into custody.
The arrested individual, Ariful Haq Mithu, is the son of Rezaul Haq of Mahajanpur village and serves as the General Secretary of the Mahajanpur Union Youth League in Mujibnagar.
According to the joint forces and local sources, a 7.65 mm pistol (Made in the USA), a magazine, and two live rounds of ammunition were recovered from him.
Furthermore, residents have accused Mithu of extortion, rape, involvement in explosive-related offences, and various acts of sabotage. In 2023, local people staged assemblies and protest programmes demanding his arrest for these alleged activities.
OC Jahidul Islam of Mujibnagar Police Station confirmed the arrest and stated that a case under the Arms Act is being prepared against Ariful Haq Mithu. Following legal procedures, he will be sent to Meherpur court.
