UP chairman jailed for extortion in Natore

Ayub Ali, Union Parishad Chairman of Nazirpur union in Gurudaspur Upazila of Natore, was sent to jail on charge of extortion on Saturday.

Police arrested him from Nazirpur Bazar area on Friday. Later, the court sent him to jail on Saturday morning. He is also the president of Awami League Nazirpur union unit.

It was learnt that vice president of upazila BNP and Headmaster of Mariam Girls' High School, Firoz Ali, filed an extortion case in Gurudaspur court as the plaintiff. In response to the case, the police conducted an investigation, and upon the court's directive, the case was recorded at the police station. Subsequently, the police carried out an operation and arrested the UP Chairman.

The plaintiff Firoz Ali said Chairman Ayub Ali demanded a large amount of money from him in July of 2023. As Firoz Ali could not pay the money, Ayub Ali occupied 13 shatak land of the school and gave a boundary around the land with barbed wire. He also filed several false cases against Firoz Ali in the past. Firoz Ali said the UP Chairman needs to be taken to remand to find out the truth and demanded his punishment.

Officer-in-Charge of Gurudaspur police station Golam Sarwar Hossain said Chairman Ayub Ali presented at court on Friday morning. The court sent him to jail.
