UP chairman arrested for assaulting farmer

Police have arrested UP Chairman Abdus Sattar for allegedly beating up farmer Shahidul Islam for seeking relief at Lalpur in Natore.  Natore district police arrested him from the Ishwardi area of Pabna district around 10 am on Friday. Police Superintendent Liton Kumar Saha announced the arrest of Abdus Sattar at a press briefing at the office of the Superintendent of Police on Friday afternoon.

It is reported that due to coronavirus, Shahidul Islam of Angaripara village of Arjunpur Baramahati (AB) union of Lalpur No 4 lost his livelihood and spent his days in distress. After hearing from people about the hotline, he called 333 for relief on April 10. Angered by the incident on April 12, Abdus Sattar, the UP chairman, called Shahidul Islam to the union council and summoned a guard to beat him in a room of the union council.

The issue came to public knowl edge when it was posted on Facebook. Farmer Shahidul Islam on Wednesday filed a case with Lalpur police station on April 15 accusing UP chairman Abdus Sattar, ward no 5 UP member Reza (35) and Md Rubel (30).

Police Superintendent Liton Kumar Saha said that Abdus Sattar was absconding after the case. Finally, a police team arrested him on Friday morning. Among others present at the press briefing were Abul Hasnat, Additional Superintendent of Police at Natore Sadar Circle, ASP Haroon Aur Rashid of Barayagram Circle, and Jahangir Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Natore Sadar Police Station.

On the other hand, Lalpur Upazila Executive Officer Ummul Benin Dyuti said that UP chairman Abdus Sattar had been given show cause notice. He has been asked to respond as to why he will be taken into custody within the next three business days. On the other hand, relief assistance has been given to the victim farmer Shahidul Islam.
