Unilever, CCC, YPSA join forces for plastic circularity

Unilever Bangladesh Limited (UBL), in collaboration with Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) and Young Power in Social Action (YPSA), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at improving plastic circularity in Chattogram. The signing ceremony took place at the Radisson Blu Chattogram Bay View in Chattogram, with key representatives from each organization in attendance.

Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury was present as the chief guest. CEO of Chattogram City Corporation Sheikh Mohammad Tauhidul Islam, CEO and Managing Director of Unilever Bangladesh Ltd. Zaved Akhtar, and Finance Director of Young Power in Social Action Palash Chowdhury signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations.

During the event, a panel discussion was held, featuring special guests including Mubarak Ali, Honorable Councilor and Chairman of the Standing Committee for Waste Management, Chattogram City Corporation, Mohammad Abul Hasem, Acting Chief Conservancy Officer (Deputy Secretary), Chattogram City Corporation, Hillol Biswas, Director (Deputy Secretary), Chattogram Metro, and Shamima Akhter, Director of Corporate Affairs, Partnership, and Communication, Unilever Bangladesh Ltd. The panelists deliberated on the challenges and opportunities associated with holistic plastic waste management.

Mayor Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury emphasized the urgent need for collective action to combat plastic waste mismanagement, highlighting its detrimental effects on the environment. He expressed hope that the collaboration between CCC, UBL, and YPSA would enhance the local value chain, support waste workers, and drive plastic circularity in Chattogram.

Zaved Akhtar, CEO and Managing Director of Unilever Bangladesh Limited, underscored the company's commitment to improving the health of the planet and praised the tireless dedication of Mayor Chowdhury. Akhtar also emphasized the importance of collaboration and shared that the partnership aims to bring economies of scale and intensify collection efforts to address plastic pollution more effectively.

The collaboration between Unilever Bangladesh, Chattogram City Corporation, and YPSA holds the promise of fostering sustainable practices, safeguarding the environment, and working towards the vision of plastic circularity in Chattogram City.
