UNFPA hygiene items distributed among women, girls in Jamalpur

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) responded to floods caused by landslides and heavy rains from upstream with an exceptional initiative by distributing hygiene items among women, girls and children in Jamalpur on Monday. Development Association, Mass Development Centre, LAMB Hospital and CWFD are implementing the initiative as supporting organizations.

It was learnt that, among 2,184 families in Dewanganj and Madarganj upazila, each mother was given Tk 900 for travel and menstrual health safety items worth of Tk 2000, including saree, bucket, and soap was distributed among the women of the upazilas. A total of 1,500 girls were given vouchers and Tk 850 so that they can buy medicine and other hygiene items items from pharmacy.

Two hundred children were provided with children's items including toys, clothes. Through the health camp, girls were provided with VIA test and other health check-ups and medical services. For this work, a health team was formed with doctors, midwives and nurses. Three hundred third gender persons received Tk 4,000 through Bkash. Apart from this, 600 mothers of reproductive age were given Tk 4,329 through Bkash.

Minister of Religion Faridul Haque Khan Dulal inaugurated the distribution programme of children's materials at Moradabad Government Primary School of Partharshi union in Islampur. He expressed his gratitude to UNFPA, Mass Development Center, LAMB Hospital and CWFD organizations for distributing hygiene items and conducting health camps among women and teenage girls. He called for such great work in every flood affected area.

The minister said that many of us distribute food items in many areas. But people give less attention to such inevitable issues for the hygienic safety of women, girls and children. He again thanked the agencies for implementing the timely distribution of the said materials. The Minister of Religion also expressed his gratitude for helping the underprivileged members of the third gender under this programme.

Madarganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Faizul Wasima Nahat inaugurated the Motherganj upazila hygiene items distribution programme. Islampur Upazila Chairman Lawyer Abdus Salam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Sirajul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Islampur police station Suman Talukdar, UNFPA representatives Romana Khan, Atahar Ali, Director of Development Association Murshed Iqbal, Jannat from Gana Unnayan Kendra, and others were present at that time.
