It is learned that the local farmers in Chandpur Tetultala village of the upazila are uncertain about the cultivation due to heavy rainfall in the area. Waterlogging occurs when it rains as the culverts are filled with soil for several years. On the one hand, more than 20 families in the area become marooned due to waterlogging. In addition hundreds of bighas of farmers' seedbeds were submerged due to heavy rains. As a result, marginal farmers face huge losses. In 1986, the government built a culvert for the benefit of the farmers.
However, the affected farmers of the area have been facing losses in cultivation as some people in the area have closed the mouth of the culvert for several years. Meanwhile, victims have sought UNO's permanent solution to the water crisis.
Hundreds of farmers' crop lands are becoming uncultivated due to waterlogging, locals say. As a result, marginal farmers are not able to cultivate in this area. The administration must take immediate steps to offset the loss of farmers in the crisis in Covid-19. Besides, the conscious community of the area has demanded immediate drainage by constructing a drain next to the culvert.
The victim, Motalib Hossain, said, "The government officially built a culvert in 1986. Water was always drained from this side. However, over the years, some people in the area have stopped draining water by filling the mouth of the culvert with soil. Another victim Abu Saeed and Md. Elin Mia said the seedbed of about 300 bighas of land had been submerged. We demand the government to make the culvert easy for drainage. "
Upazila Parishad Vice Chairman Rezaul Karim said drainage was not possible for some people in the area. We are also making every effort on behalf of the Upazila Parishad for a better solution.
Katiadi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jyotish Pal said, "I have received complaints about waterlogging. This waterlogging is mainly due to the filling of sand in the mouth of the culvert.
In the meantime, we have formed a technical team. And the technical team visited that place. As soon as we get their report, I will take a long-term action to reduce the water blockage.
'Kishoreganj-2 MP Nur Mohammad said that he was not aware of the matter. He found out through the journalists.
