UK to assist digital economy development

The United Kingdom government will provide all kinds of assistance to consolidate Bangladesh's position in the digital economy globally. Such assurance came up when the UK's Minister of State for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport, Matt Warman, had a bilateral meeting with the visiting ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palk in British Parliament’s Suite in London on Monday.

They discussed various issues related to the mutual interest of the two countries, especially the overall progress of the IT sector. During the meeting, the state minister informed that “Bangladesh is advancing fast in the digital economy. Now, 10 crore people are using the internet, which is the biggest opportunity for the digital economy. Using such an opportunity, the country is marching towards the digital economy.”

“The government has adopted three agenda to implement Digital Economy which is, creation of technologically efficient human resources, bringing all citizens of the country under broadband connectivity and facilitating societies with digital payment system. The transition of digital wallet from mobile banking is also in the final stage”, he added.

He also mentioned that the country’s youths are the major weapon in achieving the digital economy. On the other hand, due to affordable labor and lower capital risks, the UK’s IT companies are now turning to Bangladesh. Matt Warman having all the information remarked that the progress of the country is implausible. On behalf of the UK government, he pledges to provide all kinds of cooperation to Bangladesh in the field of the digital economy.

In the meeting, both countries have agreed to jointly work and study for emerging technologies, including IoT, big data, blockchains, artificial intelligence to build a startup culture between the two countries, expand trade and commerce, build capabilities on the fourth industrial revolution.

The High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the United Kingdom Saida Muna Tasneem among others were present at the bilateral meeting.
