UK assistance sought in diversifying products, trade research in Bangladesh

Tipu Munshi calls on UK Intl. Trade Minister

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Wednesday called upon the United Kingdom to help Bangladesh in enhancing technological capacities in diversifying indigenous products and to assist in trade related research.     

Minister made the call while addressing a meeting with the visiting UK  delegation led, by the UK Minister for International Trade Nigel Huddleston MP at the Hotel Intercontinental, Dhaka.  

Mentioning that the UK is the 3rd largest export destination of Bangladesh, Minister said Bangladesh has exported to UK worth $ 5.31 billion in 2022-23 while imported from the country worth $ 450 Million.

 Minister mentioned that there have huge scope of further developing the trade and investment between the two countries.

He said the joint working group has already held two meetings in strengthening bi-lateral economic and trade relationship between the two countries while the 3rd meeting will also be held immediately. He also urged UK government to investment in the economic zones in Bangladesh.    

The meeting discussed the UK’s world-leading Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS), which came into force last month, and makes it easier for Bangladesh to trade with the UK.

"1st and 2nd Bangladesh-UK Trade and Investment Dialogue' will be held in Dhaka. This routine dialogue will contribute to further strengthening the trade and investment of the two countries", Minister added. 

The UK Minister for International Trade Nigel Huddleston arrived in Dhaka on Tuesday for a visit focused on strengthening trade and investment ties between the two countries.

Minister said The UK is committed to working with Bangladesh to create a trade and investment relationship that will create jobs and grow both economies.

Minister for International Trade Nigel Huddleston said: “The UK has a strong and enduring relationship with Bangladesh, and our trade with the country has grown significantly over the past year. “My first visit here demonstrates the UK’s strong ambition to work with Bangladesh to achieve an enhanced trade and investment relationship. I look forward to working with the Government of Bangladesh on increasing mutual prosperity by addressing barriers to market access and trade.”

British High Commissioner to Dhaka Sarah Katherene Kook and Additional Secretary Ministry of Commerce, Md. Abdur Rahim Khan along with other senior officials of the ministry and High Commission were also present on the occasion.
