The University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Dr Kazi Shahidullah on Monday urged the industrialists to recruit country’s meritorious graduates in order to ensure practical and quality education.
He said, “We have to strengthen the cooperation between universities and industrial institutions to hire students with technical knowledge. But this cooperation will have to come from both sides.”

He said this while addressing a workshop titled Current Status and Future responsibility of the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of private universities held at UGC on Monday.
The UGC Chairman said, “Industrial institutions can seek support from universities in solving their problems, including research. You have to recruit talented graduates of the country without depending on foreign manpower.”

Urging the vice-chancellors of universities to play major role in bringing qualitative change in higher education, the UGC chairman said, “No university in the country could achieve any position in the world ranking. This is not desirable. Therefore, ensuring quality of higher education of the universities is the main concern of UGC.”

UGC member professor Dr Muhammad Alamgir presided over the workshop.
Dr Alamgir said, “The universities should take effective measures to ensure that the universities of the country move forward in higher education and place them in the world rankings. The UGC will soon make a comprehensive proposal and send it to the universities.”

UGC Member Professor Dil Afroza Begum, Member of Bangladesh Accreditation Council Professor Dr SM Kabir, Vice-Chancellors from 44 private universities, nominated representatives, directors of UGC and IQAC, were present, among others.
