Two-thirds of NSTU students’ mental health deteriorates for Covid-19

The teachers of Noakhali  Science and Technology University (NSTU) in a research found that two-thirds of NSTU students’ psychological conditions is getting worse and their mental health has been highly affected during Covid-19 pandemic.

On Thursday, this information was found from the research paper published in Asian Journal of University Education (AJUA). The study was conducted by Dr Md. Roknuzzaman Siddiky, Chairman and Associate Professor of the university's Sociology Department and Mohammad Muniruzzaman, Assistant Professor of the same Department.

NSTU Research Cell provided findings for this study where total 157 students from 18 Departments participated. Among them, 38.2 percent (60 students) were male and rest 61.8 percent (97 students)were female participants while 10.2 percent (16 students) from first year, 22.9 percent (36 students) from second year, 39.5 percent (62 students) from third year and 27.4 percent (43 students) from 4th year participated from Microbiology, BGE, English, EEE, Oceanography, Sociology, Law, CSTE, MIS, Agriculture, THM, Applied Mathematics, Economics, BLWS, ESDM, FIMS, Pharmacy and Sociology departments.

The researchers use 6 indicators (anxiety, depression, tension, restlessness, boredom and fear) to find the change of psychological conditions where two-thirds of students voted for highly affected on these indicators and rest one-third of students voted for less affected on these indicators. Besides, the students’ inattentiveness to study found in the study where 87.9 percent (138 students) voted for highly inattentive and rest 12.1 percent (19 students) voted for less inattentive. The researchers find that there is a strong positive association between the students’ inattentiveness to study and their psychological conditions. The worse of students’ psychological conditions have adverse affect in students mental health which results in students being in highly inattentive to study.  The researchers suggest for taking steps to set up counseling in all universities including NSTU so that the students’ psychological conditions and mental health become improved and the students become attentive to study.
