Two prisoners die in Kushtia

Two inmates of Kushtia District Jail died at Kushtia General Hospital while undergoing treatment, jail authorities said on Friday.

The deceased are Ajmal Pramanik, 60, of Daulatpur upazila, and Abul Kalam, 40, of Thanapara area of the district.

Pramanik died at 1:10am while Kalam around 6:30am. Both were taken to the hospital after they fell ill on Thursday night and in the early hours on Friday, said Tapas Kumar Sarkar, resident medical officer of Kushtia General Hospital.

Kushtia District Jail Superintendent Abdul Bareque claimed the two died of cardiac arrest.

Pramanik was serving a 30-year jail term in a murder case. He had been in custody for almost a year. Meanwhile, Kalam was sentenced to three months in jail in a narcotics case.

The jail superintendent said the bodies will be handed over to the families after an autopsy.
