Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Mamunur Rashid Mamun, a key accused in connection with the rape of a woman after holding her husband captive at the Jahangirnagar University (JU), and his accomplice on Wednesday.
Mamun was arrested from the Farmgate area in the capital, and Murad Hossain, a JU student, from Naogaon district.
RAB Legal and Media wing director Commander Khandaker Al Moin said “A team of RAB conducted drives in the capital’s Farmgate and Naogaon district simultaneously and arrested Mamun and Murad respectively.”
“During the primary interrogation, Mamun revealed that he was initially engaged in garments trade but dealing in drugs was his main business. He used Jahangirnagar University as his operating base. Mamun used to bring 7,000 to 8,000 pieces of yaba every month from Cox’s Bazar and supply them to current and former students of this university,” Moin said.
Mamun reportedly admitted to being involved in drug dealing for a long time. He lived as a sublet in the victim’s house while her husband had been his business partner for more than three years.
On February 2 Mamun told victim’s husband that he decided to live at the residential hall. He told the victim’s husband to tell his wife to bring his (Mamun’s) clothes to the dormitory.
When the victim came to JU Mamun and Mustafiz took her to a secluded area and gang raped her keeping victim’s husband in the hall room.
“They later went to the hall room and threatened the victim's husband and assaulted him,” Moin said.
The RAB officer said Mamun is accused in more than eight drug cases. “Bottola on the campus was his main centre of operation,” he said.
“Many others are involved in drug-related crimes on campus. We’ve got several names. Legal action will be taken against them,” he said.
On Saturday night, a woman was raped on campus after her husband was confined to a room at Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall.
Six people, including at least four members of JU unit Chhatra League, have been accused. Four of them were arrested on Sunday.
The incident sparked protests on the campus, with hundreds of students gathering in front of the Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall. They demanded the expulsion of the rapists and justice for the victim.
