Two lynched over cattle rustling in Sirajganj

Two individuals were lynched over an alleged cattle theft in the Panchthakuri area of Chhongacha Union in Sirajganj Sadar upazila on Sunday night.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed. Police have detained two individuals in connection with the incident.

According to locals, a group of five to six individuals from the char area of Kazipur upazila was fleeing with stolen cattle on a boat. When locals noticed them, they intercepted the boat and caught two of the alleged thieves. One died on the spot from the mob beating, while the other died on the way to the hospital. The rest managed to escape.

Sirajganj Sadar River Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam confirmed the incident on Monday morning.

He stated that the group was attempting to cross the Jamuna River at night with stolen cattle. Locals, sensing suspicious activity, used another boat to block their path. Upon inspection, several cows were found tied inside the boat. This sparked public outrage, and the mob beat the suspects. One died on the spot, and the other died en route to the hospital.

The bodies have been kept at Sirajganj Shaheed Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital.

Sirajganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mokhlesur Rahman confirmed the deaths and said police are investigating to uncover the full details of the incident.
