Two farmers were killed and four others were injured in lightning strike in Ratanpur Salua ground area of Panchbibi upazila of the district on Monday morning.
The deceased were identified as Delwar Hossain Dulal (58), son of deceased Biraj Mollah of Ratanpur Jorpukuria village and Mofazzal Hossain (55), son of Hossain Ali of Ratanpur Chowdhury Para of Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat.
The injured were Khalilur Rahman, son of Hamed Ali of Ratanpur village, Sirajul Islam, son of Shadir Uddin, Sabbir Hossain, son of Mofazzal Hossain and Emdadul Haque, son of Mohasin of Karia village of Panchbibi upazila.
Panchbibi police station officer-in-charge (OC) Palash Chandra Dev said that some farmers were planting Aman Paddy at Ratanpur Salua ground in the morning. Suddenly, lightning flashed with clouds in the sky and they with clouds in the sky came home and took shelter into a shallow water irrigation machine room.
Dulal and Mofazal died on the spot when lightning struck there. Four people were injured at the time. Locals rescued the injured and admitted them to Joypurhat district modernized hospital.
