Two killed in land dispute in Nalitabari

Two people, including a UP member, were killed and ten others were injured in a land dispute at Nalitabari in Sherpur.

The incident took place at Rajnagar village of the upazila on Wednesday (August 26) morning.

The deceased were identified as Joynal Abedin (60) of Bongaon village under Gouripur union of Jhenaigati upazila and Riazul Haque, 50, of Rajnagar village under Nalitabari upazila.

According to locals, Abdus Salam and Riazul Haque of Rajnagar village had been in dispute over land for some time. Riazul Haque planted aman paddy in uncultivated land this season. The two groups clashed when Abdus Salam’s men tried to seize the land.

At least 12 people on both sides were seriously injured. The injured were admitted to Sherpur District Sadar Hospital and Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Later, UP members Joynal Abedin and Reazul Haque on Abdus Salam’s side died while undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Upon hearing the news of the death of UP member Joynal Abedin, his mother Joynabi Begum (60) died. Sherpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) Billal Hossain, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Nalitabari (Circle) Jahangir Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Nalitabari Police Station Bashir Ahmed Badal, Officer-in-Charge of Jhenaigati Police Station Abu Bakar Siddique and other district police officials visited the spot.

The bodies of the deceased are at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nalitabari Police Station Bashir Ahmed Badal said both the parties were preparing for the case.
