Two children drowned when they went to take bath at Buri Teesta river in Indararpar area under Bagchir Khamar union of Ulipur Upazila of Kurigram district on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Hasi Akter, 9, daughter of Habibur Rahman and Mim Akter, 8, granddaughter of Monnaf Ali, residents of the area.
Local Union Parishad (UP) member Ismail Hossain Bablu confirmed the matter.
Sources said Hasi and Mim went to take a bath with their grandmother in Indararpar area on Friday noon. At one stage, they drowned in the river. Their grandmother started shouting as they went missing in the river. Hearing her shout, the locals of the area rushed to the spot and rescued the children from the river. They were taken to Ulipur Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctor declared them dead.
Ulipur Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Abu Bakkar Siddik said UD cases were filed and the bodies were handed over to their families as there was no complaint from any of the families.
