The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department has detained two passengers at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital with four kilograms of gold paste worth around Tk 3 crore.
On Friday, two passengers, Delwar and Ravi Mia, were detained with gold from Dubai-Sylhet-Dhaka-bound Biman Bangladesh Airlines. A case will be filed against them under the Customs and Criminal Law.
Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate Deputy Director Sheikh Masudur Rahman has confirmed the matter.
According to the customs detective, officials and employees of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation took precautionary measures at various points of the airport in view of the information that gold could be smuggled through Dubai-Sylhet-Dhaka-bound Biman Bangladesh Airlines Flight No. BG-0248.
Later, two passengers named Delwar and Ravi Mia were identified. In the initial interrogation, they denied carrying gold. After scanning their luggage and checking their archway, a total of 1,935 grams of paste-like gold was found in Delwar's luggage of 1,100 grams and 835 grams in his rectum.
Another passenger, Ravi Mia, was found with 2,220 grams of paste-like gold on the underside of his legs. A total of 4,155 grams of paste-like gold was found from the two passengers. Its estimated market value is more than Tk 2.90 crore.
In this regard, the customs intelligence authorities further said that after the plane landed in Sylhet from Dubai, they boarded the plane as domestic passengers.
A departmental case and a criminal case are being filed under the Customs Act in this regard.
