A verdict was announced in the case of the murder of a madrasa student, Atiqur Rahman Atiq (18), in Jamalpur. The Child Court has sentenced two students from the same madrasa to 10 years of detention each.
Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of Jamalpur Child Court-1 pronounced this verdict Wednesday afternoon, 19 years after the incident.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Fazlul Haq of Child Court-1 stated that the victim, Atiqur Rahman Atiq, was a final-year residential student of the local Aftabiya Hafizia Madrasa in Baniyanirchar West Para area of Dewanganj upazila. He was the son of Ahmad Ali from the Chikajan area of the upazila.
Following a previous altercation, on the morning of August 26, 2006, madrasa student Saddam Mia (16), son of Syed Ali from Bahadurabad Sardarpara village in Dewanganj upazila, stabbed the sleeping Atiqur Rahman Atiq in the abdomen with a knife. He was assisted by another student, Ripon (16), son of Nasir Ali from Harindhara village in Islampur upazila. They fled the scene afterwards.
The critically injured Atiqur Rahman Atiq was rescued and taken to Dewanganj Upazila Health Complex. Due to his grave condition, he was referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for better treatment. However, he died on the way to the hospital.
Later that same day, the victim's elder brother, Babu Mia (22), filed a murder case at Dewanganj Police Station, naming Saddam Mia and Ripon as the accused.
Police submitted the charge sheet of the case to the court on October 14, 2006. After recording the testimony of 13 out of 16 witnesses in the case, the court announced the verdict on Wednesday in the presence of the accused.
Since the accused were minors at the time of the incident, their trial was held in the Child Court. However, they are currently 35 years old. The court sentenced both accused to 10 years of detention each.
Advocate Fazlul Haq, PP, represented the state in the case, while Advocate Md. Anwar Hossain defended the accused.
