Two AL leaders held in Ulipur

Police arrested two Awami League leaders from Kurigram on Friday in connection with the attack on students and people during Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Kurigram.

The arrestees were identified as Azhar Ali Sarkar Raza, former joint general secretary of Ulipur upazila unit Awami League, and Rezaul Karim Raza, president of Tobockpur union unit Awami League.

Members of Kurigram Sadar Police Station and Ulipur Police Station conducted separate drives and detained them on early Friday. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ulipur Police Station Abu Bakkar Siddique confirmed the matter. He said the two AL leaders were arrested as a case was filed against them in connection with the attack and clashes during Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Kurigram on August 4.

It was learnt that leaders and activists of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League attacked the gathering of anti-discriminatory student and people, with locally made weapons, in Ghoshpara area of district town on August 4. Almost 35 people on both sides were injured. Later, member of district Jubo Dal Abu Taher, filed a case on September 13 in this connection, accusing 85 named leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliated organizations, along with 100 to 150 unidentified leaders and activists.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kurigram Sadar Police Station Nazmul Hossain said two individuals were arrested. 

There are cases against them in connection with creating anarchy, vandalizing property and harming peace and order on August 4. They were sent to jail through the court.
