A team of joint forces detained one leader of Awami League and another leader of Jubo League with large number of locally made weapons and bullets from Gangni Upazila of Meherpur district on Saturday.
A team of joint forces conducted a drive at Chorgowal village in Gangni Upazila on early Saturday and detained the duo.
The detainees are identified as Union Jubo League leader Rajon Ali, 29, son of Shahidul Islam, resident of Chorgowal village in Gangni upazila, and local Awami League leader Rakibul Islam, 35, son of Haydar Ali, resident of the same village in the upazila.
A total of eight rounds of bullets and 27 locally made weapons including 16 large and small Hasua, one axe, one cleaver, one Da, three knives, four rods and one Ankra were recovered from their possession at that time.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of joint forces, led by Commander of Meherpur Army Camp Lieutenant Colonel Nabil Ahmed, conducted a drive at the riverside of Chorgowal village and detained Rakibul Islam and Rajon. Later, based on their confession, another drive was conducted at Shobkul Ali’s son-in-law’s house in the same village and 27 locally made weapons along with eight rounds of bullets were recovered from there. Sensing that the drive by the joint force is being conducted, owner of the house Lablu fled the scene.
Sources from Gangni police station said there are complaints of robbery and criminal activities in the area against Rajon and Rakibul Islam. Earlier, they were detained by the police more than once. Both of them went to jail several times.
Commander of Meherpur Army Camp Lieutenant Colonel Nabil Ahmed confirmed the matter. He said that a case was filed against the detainees and they were sent to the court.
Investigation Officer of Gangni Police Station Monoj Kumar Nondi said a case was filed in this connection.
