Acclaimed theatre troupe Dhaka Padatik is bringing back its popular historical play Trial of Surya Sen for its 38th staging. The performance will take place on July 20 at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA).
The drama highlights the courageous struggle and unjust trial of anti-colonial revolutionary leader Masterda Surya Sen, who fought against British rule in the Indian subcontinent. The play presents the final days of Surya Sen and his companions, depicting their bravery and sacrifice.
Originally written and directed by the late Ekushey Padak-winning actor and playwright Masum Aziz, the play has now been re-envisioned by renowned actor and director Nader Chowdhury. He has not only directed the new version but will also take on the central role of Surya Sen.
Ahead of the staging, final rehearsals are scheduled for July 18 and 19. Last year, the production earned high praise during its two performances in Delhi, receiving positive reviews from both audiences and critics.
Speaking about the production, Nader Chowdhury said, “This is an important play based on our history and anti-British movement. I have made a few changes while maintaining the original spirit. It’s essential for today’s generation to witness this powerful story.”
The play features around 40 characters, including Surya Sen, Pritilata Waddedar, Kalpana Dutta, and others involved in the revolution. Among the cast are Nader Chowdhury, Mahbuba Haque Kumkum, Manzurul Islam Nantu, Shahnaz Parvin Joya, Mamun Ur Rashid, and several others.
Zakaria Kiran has handled the lighting design, while Abul Bashar Sohel is overseeing the music direction.
Notably, Trial of Surya Sen premiered on January 18, 2018, and continues to resonate with audiences for its moving depiction of history.
