Tree felling without permission to be punished, DNCC Mayor warns

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam warned that stern measures would be taken against the unauthorized cutting of trees.

“There will be no exception for cutting down trees. If anybody cuts any trees, they will face strict consequences,” said the mayor at an inauguration ceremony of a campaign titled “Let's Save the Planet,” aiming to remove plastic waste across the country, organized by Pran-RFL.

“I have instructed that development work should proceed without felling the existing roadside trees. Development does not mean cutting down trees," Atiqul Islam said.

The DNCC mayor informed that any individual or organization wishing to prune or cut down trees would need to seek permission from the city corporation. "We will consult with environmentalists and urban planners before giving any approval. No trees can be cut in the DNCC area without permission," said the mayor.

Mayor Atiqul also highlighted the severe environmental harm caused by plastic bottles.

"Businesses are making substantial profits by selling products in plastic bottles. They cannot pollute the environment while conducting their business. The producers themselves must take responsibility to prevent plastic pollution," he asserted.
