A week-long tree plantation campaign and tree fair were inaugurated in Meherpur on Monday. A rally was brought out on this occasion from the premises of the Deputy Commissioner Office at around 11 o'clock.
The tree plantation programme was arranged by Meherpur Forest Department under the District Commission.
Deputy Commissioner Md Shameem Hasan led the rally. Superintendent of Police SM Nazmul Haque, Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Tanvir Hasan Ruman, District Election Officer Waliullah, District Forest Officer ST Hamim Haider were also present at this time. The rally paraded through the main road of the town and ended at Deputy Commissioner Office. The guests visited various stalls after end of the rally. Qualities of fruit trees, forest tress, decorative trees and medicinal plants were described at that time.
The visitors who came to the tree fair were happy to see the splendid collection of various plants of new varieties. Among the attractions of the tree fair, there were Rambutan, persimmon, avocado, grape and other high yielding plants of new varieties. After visiting the stalls, District Administration and Forrest Department urged everyone to plant trees. The tree fair will continue till September 15 from 8:00am to 10:00pm. Various nurseries from three upazilas of the district participated in the fair with 17 stalls.
People of various classes and occupations are crowding to visit the fair and buy plants. Besides that, District Forest Department is planning to conduct tree plantation drive at various fallow lands.
