Trawlers with 72 fishermen seized in Hatia for defying fishing ban

The Coast Guard has arrested 72 people, including four engine-powered fishing trawlers, in Hatia, Noakhali, for violating government restrictions. During this time, 13 different types of marine fish have been seized from them.

The detainees were released on Tuesday morning with a fine of Tk 40,000 through a mobile court. The seized 13 ounces of fish has been sold at auction for Tk 1 lakh 30 thousand.

Hatia Coastguard said the government has imposed a 75-day ban on fishing in the sea to protect the country's fishery resources and breed fish. A team from the Coast Guard South Zone raided the Hatiyar maritime area to enforce the ban. 

On Monday night, after fishing in the sea, a group of fishermen was coming to Nalchira Ghat in an engine-driven trawler. 

Later, their trawlers were searched and 13 different types of marine fish including hilsa were seized.

Bangladesh Coast Guard South Zone Media Officer Lt. KM Shafiul Kinjal said Hatia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Selim Hossain conducted a mobile court and fined four trawlers, including 72 fishermen, Tk 40,000. Besides, the seized fish has been sold at auction for one lakh and thirty thousand rupees. During the embargo, the Coast Guard will continue its crackdown on fisheries until July 23.
