A Dhaka court on Wednesday imposed a travel ban on former National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman and Senior Secretary Abu Hena Md. Rahmatul Muneem, along with five others, amid an ongoing investigation into corruption.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md. Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order following two separate petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The information was confirmed by ACC spokesperson Akhtarul Islam.
The other individuals barred from leaving the country include Muneem’s wife Laila Jesmin, former First Secretary of the NBR Eidtazul Islam and his wife Sharmi Mala Ansari, as well as former Ward-31 Councillor of Dhaka South City Corporation Sheikh Mohammad Alamgir and his wife Shamima Alam.
According to the ACC’s application, submitted by Deputy Director Md. Saiduzzaman, the individuals are under investigation for alleged abuse of power, misappropriation of public funds, and amassing illegal wealth beyond known sources of income in the names of themselves and their family members.
The ACC stated that reliable sources indicated the suspects may attempt to flee the country to evade legal proceedings. The travel ban has been imposed to ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
