Transport strike causes acute suffering in Sylhet division

The transport strike in Sylhet division on Monday caused immense suffering to passengers. 

The road transport workers called the day-long strike for Tuesday in four districts of Sylhet to press home their seven-point demand. The 12-hour transport strike called by Sylhet divisional unit of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation.

The demands include amendment of some sections of the ‘Road Transport Act 2018’ and solve of the issue which created following the killing of Sylhet Agricultural University student Wasim Afnan.

Wasim was crushed under the wheels of a running bus at Sherpur on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Moulvibazar after he was pushed off the bus by its helper on March 23. The bus driver and his helper were arrested in this connection.

During the strike, no transport was seen at Habiganj terminal as well as internal roads from 6:00 am as the strike began at 6:00 am. 

The people as well as the passengers experienced huge sufferings due to the strike.  

General Secretary of Habiganj District Road Bus Owner Labour Association Shonkho Shuvro Ray said that more than 250 transports did not leave the terminal.

Our Staff Correspondent from Sylhet reports that the strike has paralysed the normal life in the division. The public transport were restricted. No other vehicles but a few CNG-run auto rickshaws and rickshaws were seen plying inside Sylhet city. The transport workers were seen guarding at entry points of the city and barring vehicles even the private vehicles from entering.
