A 50-year-old man was killed as a clash broke out over standing in qatar (rows during prayer) in a mosque during the Jummah prayer in Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria district on Friday noon.

Sizal Miah was the son of late Momtaj Miah of Alamnagar area under Nabinagar municipality.

Saifuddin Anowar, officer-in-charge of Nabinagar police station, said there had long been a dispute between victim Sizal and another Shah Alam in the area.

"An argument broke out between them over standing in the qatar at the mosque when the prayer was about to begin," he said.

At one stage, supporters from both sides locked into the clash in front of the devotees while Sizal sustained severe injuries from being punched and kickeda, he said.

However, the prayer was a bit delayed due to the clash.

Later, the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where physicians declared him dead upon arrival.

On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

The body was sent to the Sadar hospital morgue for an autopsy, said the OC, adding that a person named Nure Alam was detained in this connection.
