'Fire safety, building safety, electrical safety should be ensured on their own responsibility. In many commercial buildings shops are placed on stairs. We will visit anytime. The trade license will be canceled if there is an obstacle in the stairs of any building and there is a defect in the security system.

Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Md. Atiqul Islam said these things in the chief guest's speech at the workshop titled Disaster Management Exercise at Bangladesh University of Professionals on Wednesday (October 12) morning.

DNCC Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam said, "According to Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC), it is mandatory to take permission from fire service, environment department, gas and electricity department during construction of building. In the case of high-rise buildings, it is also mandatory to have fire detectors, smoke detectors, high-speed water spray systems and carbon dioxide emission systems. But unfortunately these codes are not followed properly in the construction of most of the buildings in different cities of the country including the capital. As a result of which accidents occur at various times.'

Recalling the memory of Savar's Rana Plaza collapse, the DNCC Mayor said, 'The Rana Plaza collapse happened just one month after I took over as the president of BGME. Immediately after the incident, I immediately went there and started the rescue work. During our student life, BNCC taught us not to sit at home during calamities. People should go forward with help. People should be there during times of disaster. The victims must be rescued.'

Mayor also said, 'Garment sector is under threat after Rana Plaza collapse. Then I took over as the President of BGME. I have regular meetings with Alliance and Accord on compliance issues. Working with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) on Fire Safety, Electric Safety and Building Safety of factories. We have been able to sustain the garment sector by ensuring compliance with NFPA and BNBC.'

He said, 'I open the garment factory to the buyers. As a result we are able to gain their trust. They visited the factory and reported online. Factories that had negative reports did not receive orders. As a result, gradually everyone has been forced to ensure compliance.
