Town protection embankment collapses in Faridpur

50 meters of town protection embankment at Sadipur area in Faridpur Sadar upazila collapsed on Sunday morning due to rise of floodwater. As a result, new areas were inundated. 

Water Development Board (WDB) sources said that the mounting floodwater of the Padma river hits the dam seriously at about 6.30 am.

Dwelling houses, valuables, cattle, trees of the area have been washed away with heavy rush of floodwater, creating panic among local people. Local residents were shifted to safer place with their household valuables.

WDB’s Executive Engineer Sultan Mahmud said that they visited the spot and were trying to protect the embankment.

The floodwater might reach into the Kumar river. “We will take necessary steps in this regard,” he said.

SP of Faridpur M Alimuzzaman said that police posts have been set up at the localities to protect the lives and valuables of the affected people while Deputy Commissioner (DC) Atul Sarker asked the teams to help the inundated family members after paying his visit to the spot.

Meanwhile thousands of families including Decreer Char, Sadipur, Bhajondanga, Godadhor Dangi and some adjoining areas have been inundated by the flood water last couple of days.
