Tourist access suspended as hanging bridge submerged in Rangamati

The iconic hanging bridge in Rangamati, widely recognized as the ‘Symbol of Rangamati,’ has been partially submerged due to rising water levels in Kaptai Lake. Authorities have temporarily suspended tourist access to the bridge for safety reasons.

On Wednesday morning, parts of the 335-foot-long bridge were seen under water, with water levels reaching up to 6 inches—or more—in certain areas. In response, Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation has imposed a temporary restriction on visitor entry to prevent any potential accidents.

Alok Bikash Chakma, manager of Rangamati Tourism Corporation, confirmed the development. “Due to the lake water entering the bridge structure, we have decided to restrict public access after consultation with the authorities. The restriction will remain in effect until the water recedes,” he said.

Constructed in 1986, the suspension bridge is located in the tourism zone of Rangamati Sadar upazila.

Set between two hills and supported by pillars, it is one of the region’s most popular tourist attractions and a well-known symbol of Rangamati, accessible by both road and water.

According to the Kaptai Karnafuli Hydroelectric Power Station, the current water level in the lake stands at approximately 105.54 MSL (Mean Sea Level). If it approaches 109 MSL, authorities will open the sluice gates to release water into the Karnafuli River.

Historically, the hanging bridge becomes submerged when water levels in the lake rise above 104–105 MSL, which has now occurred again, prompting the temporary closure.
