‘Tourism to play important role in achieving SDGs’

State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Mahbub Ali said the tourism industry would play an important role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, besides strengthening the national economy through job creation and foreign exchange earnings. 

He was speaking as the chief guest at an online workshop organized by the Bangladesh Tourism Board with Patuakhali district on Wednesday with the aim of involving tourism in local development plans and creating public awareness about tourism.

He added that the expansion of tourism would help in creating employment for the local people near the tourist destination as well as improve their living standards. The money spent by tourists will strengthen the local economy. Apart from this, it will also play a helpful role in the expansion of local business, trade, traditional cottage industries and culture. 

Calling on the local administration and representatives to ensure beautiful environment in the tourist attractions, the state minister said that, “The tourist attractions and destinations should not be littered with garbage and tourists should be careful not to face any problem due to the locals. The administration and the representatives, including the local people, have to work together to ensure a beautiful and healthy environment in the tourist destination”. 

Mahbub Ali said the most conducive environment for investment is prevailing in the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. “I urge private entrepreneurs to come forward in the development of tourism. For young entrepreneurs, the tourism industry can be one of the most suitable fields for career formation. The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism is very sincere to provide all kinds of policy support to private entrepreneurs in the tourism industry”, he concluded. 

The workshop was conducted by Bangladesh Tourism Board’s Director Abu Taher Mohammad Jaber, and chaired by Deputy Commissioner of Patuakhali District Md. Matiul Islam Chowdhury.
