We express our concern over the inhuman and cruel torture of four students at the main dormitory of Chittagong Medical College (CMC). A gang of unruly youths held four students of 62nd MBBS batch hostage in a room known as torture cell. Later, they beat the four students up with iron-made pipe, stamps and sticks indiscriminately. Two of them with critical condition are now under treatment at CMCH’s ICU while two others have been sent to their respective village homes without providing treatment.

On October 30 last year, Mahdi J Akib, a second year student was also injured in a clash between two factions of BCL, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, on the CMC campus. The clash led to closure of medical college and its hostels for an indefinite period. Despite the CMC authorities’ repeated assurance that such barbaric incident would not happen in the future, but it continues to happen.

CMC authorities must ensure

security of the students and exemplary

punishment to the

attackers immediately

Studying in prestigious medical colleges has always been students’ ‘dream’. After completing intermediate many brilliant students choose to study in the country’s reputed medical colleges. Every student believes if they get admitted to any medical college, their future will be bright.

But their dreams are often shattered when they are beaten up, tortured or intimidated in many ways for different reasons like factional clash and establishing supremacy over controlling halls and campuses.

Activists of different political parties’ student wings in groups are seen roaming on the campuses, asking their rivals to leave the campus or to do something unusual.

If any student differs with them, he or she is beaten up. Even in case of personal enmity, innocent students are also branded bad people and are beaten up or tortured by their rivals. We must create such atmosphere where every student feels safe, comfortable on his or her respective campuses rather than torturing and humiliating by other students and the activists of political parties’ student wings.

CMC authorities must ensure security of the students and exemplary punishment for the attackers immediately. Such barbaric and brutal attack must not be tolerated anymore.
