Torrential rain inundates Dhaka

Heavy water-logging disrupts life, creates traffic gridlock

Many parts of the capital Dhaka submerged due to torrential downpour from Sunday midnight to Monday, adding to the misery of the city dwellers as heavy waterlogging and traffic chaos disrupted life in the capital. 

Many streets, lanes and by-lanes in Dhaka went under ankle to knee-deep water, disrupting the movement of pedestrians and office-goers, sources said.

According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department, 63mm of rain was recorded in the capital from 6am to 9am (Monday). Besides, 19 mm of rain was recorded in the last 24 hours till 6am on Monday, informed meteorologist Omar Faruk.

People, mainly office-goers and others who went out of home for various works, found themselves in trouble in the morning due to waterlogging and traffic jam.

SaifRehman, a banker who lives in capital’s Mirpur area, told Bangladesh Post, “The condition of Mirpur-10 area was awful. Only a few hours of downpour is enough to cripple the capital.This is how we live in this city.”

Md Ashraf, operation manager of AlifParibahan, said most of the areas of Mirpur including Mirpur-10 intersection, Shewrapara, Kazipara part of Begum RokeyaSarani, Agargaoncrossing, BijoySarani crossing along with Kalabagan andAsad Gatehad been inundated.

Shantinagar, Mowchak crossing andKakrail also witnessed the similar situation, said traffic inspector MdAsad, who was on-duty at Shantinagar.

He said a number of vehicles remained stranded at different city streets due to waterlogging since morning.

“Many vehicles, especially CNG, on the road were stopped in different places due to waterlogging. As a result, long tailbacks of traffic were created in these areas,” a bus driver said.

However, sufferings ofthe people worsened owing to road construction and renovation works of different projects in different parts of the city.

Due to active monsoon, all maritime ports of Bangladesh have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal No 3 as rain or thundershowers are likely to continue over the next two days.

According to a Met office media release, light to moderate rain/thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places inRangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, at many places inRajshahi and Barishal divisions and at a few places in Dhaka and Khulna divisions.
