A total of 10 events saw new national records set at the 38th National Junior Athletics Championships on Monday.
BKSP swimmer Mohammad Tofayel is in the lead for the title of best swimmer. A Year 12 student at BKSP, he first participated in age-group swimming in 2014. However, he has never been the best swimmer before, despite winning 9 gold medals previously. Now, Tofayel has set his sights on becoming the top swimmer.
Meanwhile, by the third day, Tofayel had competed in eight events, winning seven gold medals and one silver. After swimming at the Mirpur swimming pool, he said, "I hope to become the best swimmer."
Tofayel will take part in two more events on the final day on Tuesday. BKSP's Monir Khan Tanmoy set a record in the 50m freestyle, clocking 00:25.45 seconds. Polly Khatun of BKSP set a record in the girls' 50m freestyle, swimming the distance in 00:29.84 seconds. Maisha Akhter Meem set a new record in the 400m freestyle (clocking 05:28.69 seconds).
Mocha Annie Akhtar set a new record in the 400m Freestyle (for females aged 18-20 years) category, clocking 05:19.06 seconds. Subsequently, Md Taufiq of BKSP set a record in the 11-12 years boys' 50m freestyle category, swimming the distance in 00:28.05 seconds.
There were six swimming records set in the first two days, with a further 10 on the third day. In total, there have been 16 records broken so far. By the third day, BKSP topped the medals table with 68 gold medals, 44 silver medals and 14 bronze medals.
