Tk 50,000 fined for illegal sand extraction from Harihar river

A mobile court fined a young man named Hafizur Rahman Tk 50,000 for illegally extracting sand from Harihar river in Keshabpur upazila of Jashore on Wednesday.

Rezaul Karim Taru, office assistant of Keshabpur Upazila Land Office said Hafizur Rahman, son of late Korban Ali Gazi of Ghagha village, was illegally extracting sand from Harihar river flowing by Bara Pathra village of the upazila with a dredger machine.

Upon receiving the information, Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Irufa Sultana reached the spot on Tuesday evening and verified the truth. 

Sub-Inspector of Keshabpur Police Station Fazle Rabbi, Akbar Hossain of Upazila Land Office, Abdur Razzak and members of Ansar VDB were present at the time. In this regard, Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Irufa Sultana said, more stringent measures will be taken against illegal sand miners.

It may be mentioned that long-term excavation work is underway on 7 connecting canals including Harihar river, Buribhadra and Aparbhadra rivers. 49 crore 8 lakh was allocated for this and the work is still ongoing. 

Meanwhile, some influential people have been extracting sand illegally in the Boro Pathra area of Harihar river. That is why the two sides of the river are breaking and causing huge damage. The locals have demanded legal action against them.
