Intelligence agencies in a surprise raid recovered about Tk 1.25 crore from a businessman’s house in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj district early on Wednesday and arrested him along with his two accomplices. The business man Jamal Hossain and his accomplices, Mostafa Kamal and Manik Miah, were apprehended, said Harunur Rashid, superintendent of police (SP) of Narayanganj district.

The intelligence forces also seized around 2,000 banned drug yaba tablets from the house, Rashid added. On receiving a secret information that huge amount of money and yaba tablets are being prepared at a house in Rasulpur area, a team of Detective Branch of police cordoned off the area since Tuesday afternoon, said police sources.

“After getting clearance we conducted a drive on the third floor of a four-storey building and recovered the cash from a trunk and a cupboard,” intelligence sources said, adding that they also recovered about 2,000 pieces of yaba at Jamal’s office located on the ground floor. Harunur Rashid, superintendent of police (SP) of Narayanganj district said that Jamal claimed that he owns three coal factories but could not show any valid documents and also failed to show the income source of the cash.

Police primarily suspect that the arrestees stored the cash to send it abroad through hundi. Jamal was running a drug peddling operation under the guise of his business, police sources added. “We will seek their remand to find out more about their illegal activities”, the official said, adding that three cases will be filed against them on charge of money laundering, drug peddling and operating coal factories illegally.
